Atwell Takes Backstreet

Boise, ID – Owners Doug and Roni Berest welcomed back the Pechauer West Coast Tour to Backstreet Billiards April 9th and 10th. Backstreet has a reputation for steady action with Friday night minis and usually a player’s auction at every event they have. Usually not one of the top drawing stops on tour, this event drew an excellent field of 41 players to compete for the $1000 first prize. Players traveled from Montana, Washington and Oregon for this event, but it was Tinsley Johnson and road partner Craig Oden who made the trek from California!

And will I turn out to be a fortuneteller or what? Tinsley Johnson could be the one to give Atwell a run for his money in the point’s race. It certainly seemed that way as Johnson raced to the hot seat match, where Atwell was conveniently waiting for him! Atwell had only one thing on his mind, and that was great pool as he sailed to a 9-4 victory over Johnson.

Johnson went to the one-loss side where one of the players he had sent there earlier in the event was waiting with a little payback in mind. JJ Cain lost his last match of the day on Saturday to Johnson 9-2 and started Sunday play on the left side of the board. Five match wins later, Cain had his chance for revenge. The rematch between Johnson and Cain went to the wire with Cain pulling out the 9-8 victory.

The final match between Atwell and Cain was looking to be a cakewalk for Atwell as he cruised to a quick 8-2 lead, but an uncharacteristic miss by Atwell allowed Cain back into the match and he trimmed the lead to 9-5 before Atwell regained control and took the 13-6 win.

Atwell pocketed $1000 for first while Cain settled for $600 in second place prize money. Johnson and room owner Doug Berest filled out the top four spots.

Oregon City, OR – The Pechauer West Coast Tour at KC’s Midway Bar & Grill in Oregon City, Oregon saw tournament favorites upset by newcomers to the top ranks of the tour. Fondly referred to as the Midway by locals, owners Kraig and Carol Pauli take pride in providing top-notch equipment, as well as great food and service.

We all could have guessed that there would be something different about this tournament as Glenn Atwell, the dominating points leader of the tour, overslept, forcing a forfeit in his first match. It was at this very tournament last year that Atwell lost his first match only to go storming through the loser’s bracket to win the whole thing! History would not repeat as Atwell fell to Al Perez in a swift 2-7 lashing somewhere in the tied for 17th round.

KCs Midway ResultsMeanwhile, Tony Balzer was on a reign of terror dominating the winner’s side. Balzer put on a show in this event, only once allowing an opponent to get to hill-hill against him. Balzer took the hot seat with a convincing 9-3 win over Darin Walding.

Darin earned a tough 9-8 win over Tinsley Johnson on the one-loss side to earn another shot at Balzer in the finals. Walding had never finished higher than 9th place in a Pechauer Tour event, and second place would have to suffice this time as Balzer scored an equally convincing 13-6 win in the finals.

Balzer earned $750 for first, while Walding took home $500 for second. Johnson and Lingelbach filled out the top four spots. The Pechauer West Coast Tour will be at Riley’s Billiards in Albany, Oregon on June 4th-5th for their next event.
We hope to see you there!
