Billiards in Torrance, CA played host to the 6th Pechauer Tour
stop of the season. Danny, Jeremy and the BreakZone crew kept
things running smooth while owner "Underdog" Dave
Chartier tried to balance participating in the tournament, taking
care of behind-the-scenes tournament necessities, and working
the office and counter when he wasn't playing a match! But with
25 plus tables, the players were happy and all was well in Torrance.
Paul Potier of Vancouver, Canada traveled the distance for the
opportunity to really put the stretch between him and other
players contending for the lead! A bounty in the form of a bonus
was placed on his head at the beginning of the tournament to
the player(s) who could knock Potier into the loser's bracket,
and then out of the event altogether! With Dave Hemmah, Ismael
Paez, Lorry DeLeon and many other west coast champions, Potier
would have some tough playing to do!
The competition ran without a hitch on Saturday. Walking papers
were dealt a little early to Tony Annigoni who fared well in
Reno less than a month ago. Other upsets not able to make it
to Sunday were Arturo Rivera, Andy Scott, and Victor Castillo.
Winner's bracket matches started early Sunday morning with "Underdog"
Dave Chartier advancing over Francisco Gallindo, Ismael Paez
over Brian Parks, Marshall Jung over Tang Hoa, and Paul Potier
over Dave Hemmah. No one seemed to be able to cash in on the
bounty bonus, and Potier's matches seemed to get tougher and
tougher! Marshall Jung, a young, sharp and talented player from
the LA area got 7 games off Potier, but one or two missed opportunities
was all it took for Potier to send Jung to the backside. Ismael
Paez played incredibly to outdo the "Underdog" and
earn his right for the shot at winning the hot seat and collecting
the bounty on Potier.
Paez came out of the gate shooting strong against Potier with
his powerful break and awesome fire power. The match teetered
back and forth but the table seemed to be working against Potier.
Paez stayed steady and finished off the match guaranteed at
least second place and collected a $25 bonus for beating Potier.
Over on the one-loss side Hemmah stopped Jung in fourth for
his second shot at Potier. In this match against Potier, the
table refused to be kind to Hemmah. Potier closed out the match
with his 9 wins while Hemmah was only able to muster up 5.
In the single race to 13 finals Paez "The Mexican Jumping
Bean" wasted no time jumping out to a 5-1 lead. Potier
fought back while Paez fought to maintain his lead. Both competitors
played exceptionally well, especially considering the fact that
they had both been competing for nearly 12 hours! Paez got to
the hill before Potier, but the Canadian was far from giving
up! With a score of 12-11 in favor of Paez with Potier breaking,
it looked as though the crowd would be treated to a hill-hill
one game decision when Potier miscued on his shot on the 4-ball.
The 9-ball happened to be in the jaws for Paez to pluck off
the 4-9 combo and win the set.
